MACPAC Executive Director to Retire in 2022

Congressional advisory panel to begin search for new executive director

The Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission (MACPAC) today announced that Executive Director Anne L. Schwartz, PhD, plans to retire in spring 2022. Dr. Schwartz has led the organization for nearly a decade, first joining MACPAC in 2012.

“We are extremely grateful for Dr. Schwartz’s leadership, health policy insights, and the steady hand that she brought to the Commission as it evolved from its early days into the organization it is today,” said MACPAC Chair Melanie Bella. “Her leadership at MACPAC is the capstone of 23 years of federal service in the legislative branch, helping the Commission make important, timely recommendations to Congress on topics such as CHIP, payment for prescription drugs, and disproportionate share hospital allotments to states.”

A search for a new Executive Director will begin in early 2022. Interested candidates should apply through the careers page on MACPAC’s web site.

“It’s been an honor to work closely with the Commission, and in particular the four strong women who have served as MACPAC’s chairs, “ Dr. Schwartz said. “And I’m proud to have led a smart and hardworking team who have built MACPAC’s reputation for being a trusted source on delivering nonpartisan evidence on the complex policy issues facing Medicaid and CHIP.”

Dr. Schwartz served in leadership positions in both government and in nonprofit settings throughout her career. Just prior to MACPAC, she was deputy editor for the journal Health Affairs. She has also served as vice president of Grantmakers In Health, a national nonprofit organization. Earlier, she was special assistant to the executive director and senior analyst at the Physician Payment Review Commission, a predecessor to the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission. She began her career serving on personal and committee staff in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Dr. Schwartz is a graduate of Brown University and earned her doctorate in health policy from the School of Hygiene and Public Health at The Johns Hopkins University.
