Access in Brief: Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs

Medicaid provides comprehensive coverage for eligible children and youth with special health care needs. Because of their needs, these individuals may face important health and developmental consequences if they do not receive care or if their care is delayed.

In this issue brief, MACPAC compares the characteristics of children and youth with special health care needs to children and youth without special health care needs using data from the 2016 National Survey of Children’s Health. We also compared their use of services and reported barriers by type of health coverage.
