Access to Specialty Care

Access to specialty care has been raised as a potential issue in Medicaid because fewer specialists report accepting new Medicaid patients than accept Medicare or privately insured patients. On the other hand, there are differences of opinion about when involvement of a specialist is warranted. This presentation reviews the literature on Medicaid beneficiaries’ access to specialty care, based on measures of provider availability, utilization, and beneficiaries’ experiences accessing care.
