Considerations in Extending Postpartum Coverage

States must provide Medicaid to pregnant women with incomes at or below 133 percent of the federal poverty level Coverage extends for 60 days postpartum. The 60-day postpartum coverage period has been described as a barrier to ongoing care and has sparked interest among advocates, providers, and state and federal lawmakers in extending coverage for a longer period of time.

Building on our June 2020 report that focused on Medicaid’s role in maternal health, in this session, the Commission will begin to consider the merits of extending Medicaid coverage for pregnant women beyond 60 days postpartum.
