The Commission continued its discussion on approaches to improve the collection and reporting of the Transformed Medicaid Statistical Information System (T-MSIS) race and ethnicity data. In this session, staff presented a draft chapter for the March 2023 report to Congress with two recommendations for improving the collection of these data. The Commission approved these recommendations on Friday, January 27, 2023.
Drawing on Commission discussions and findings from a literature review and key stakeholder interviews, the chapter describes why high-quality data are needed to understand and address health disparities and federal and state priorities for improving these data. It also discusses the processes and challenges with collecting and reporting high-quality data and approaches to improving their usability. The chapter concludes with the rationale and implications for Commission recommendations.
