Sources of Coverage for Children If CHIP Funding Is Exhausted

In considering the future of children’s coverage, the Commission has noted that the long-term goal should be to ensure that low- and moderate-income children have affordable coverage and access to the high-quality services critical to their healthy development. Chapter 1 looks specifically at the sources of health insurance coverage that would be available to families whose children are enrolled in CHIP, considering who would enroll and premium costs to families if federal funding for CHIP runs out in FY 2016. However, since publication of the March 2015 report, Congress renewed CHIP funding through FY 2017 (Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015, P.L. 114-10).
