Federal administrative data are critical for administration and oversight as they are the only sources that can provide a comprehensive picture of the Medicaid and CHIP programs. Historically, person-level information was collected through the Medicaid Statistical Information System (MSIS). However, as part of several CMS initiatives to improve data collection, CMS and states have transitioned to the Transformed Medicaid Statistical Information System (T-MSIS) over the past several years. This transition has been delayed and has created a significant reduction in the data available for recent time periods.
MACPAC has access to T-MSIS data and is currently working to assess the quality and completeness of key variables. Preliminary results indicate that many states may not have complete and accurate data across key variables. This presentation provides an update on the status of T-MSIS data and its availability for analyses.
