This brief offers an overview of key features of Section 1115 waiver requests of eight states (Arizona, Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, New Hampshire, Utah, and Wisconsin) to implement work requirements as a condition of Medicaid eligibility. Because the work requirement structure for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and that proposed for Medicaid are similar—and because there is a substantial body of research examining the impact of TANF’s work requirements—the brief also discusses key considerations and lessons learned from TANF.
