Children

Approximately half of all Medicaid enrollees are children, reflecting Medicaid’s historic roots and more expansive eligibility levels for children. While most children are enrolled through broad income-related pathways, other pathways exist—often targeted toward children with particular health needs, such as children in the child welfare system or children with disabilities.
